Seriously, Monday…get a life. I don’t know about you but as the days stay lighter longer and it warms up (I’ve heard it will one day anyway), the weekends get shorter. I’ve always enjoyed my weekends but since the fella and I started dating over a year ago, I live for my weekends, particularly my Saturdays. He works on Sundays so Saturday is the one day we can have together all day. This past Saturday we definitely had one to remember! K’s birthday is right around the corner and as my gift I bought Capitals hockey tickets for Saturday’s game. I also promised a dinner out at Paladar. So Saturday morning we woke up and had a little lazy time breakfast before heading downtown (in the drizzly rain) to the Caps game. We had a great time, even though they lost. The seats were great and you make your own fun when your team is losing, right? And at least it wasn’t a shutout. Back home to relax for a bit before dressing up and heading out to dinner.
Well, little did K know but I invited about 12 others to join us for dinner. Not only did we surprise him with a large birthday dinner but I managed to get some friends come out who he hadn’t seen in quite some time and I’d never actually met (partial thank you to Facebook). It’s not easy for me to surprise K. He gets a little suspicious but mainly because I’m HORRIBLE at keeping secrets from him. I get excited and I want to share everything with him. But we managed to completely surprise him and had one of the best evenings we’ve had in a while. It was full of friends, family, good food and drinks, and lots and lots of laughter.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing my fella smile and my heart just felt full watching him interact with his closest friends. I loved seeing our different walks of life friends interact and get along really well. (But I won’t lie…I’m glad it’s over because I was about to burst with that secret!)
Today the sun is shining after 3 days of rain here in Maryland and a weird freak snow “storm” yesterday afternoon. Honestly, y’all, while nothing stuck, the Facebook posts were hilarious yesterday once everyone started seeing the white stuff fall out of the sky. March has been awful around these parts and I think even the snow lovers are just over it. So the sun is shining and there is promise of temps in the 60s this week. I’m not believing it sticks until I see it.
Happy week ahead!
It’s finally Friday. It’s seemed like a very long week, yet a short one all at the same time. I was stuck inside most of Sunday and didn’t emerge into the outside world again until Thursday morning. All due to a sprained ankle. I was getting a little stir crazy, even though I knew it was cold outside but we’ve had some sunny skies, despite a little snow. So yesterday, K drove me to work before he went to work, which meant I was in the office by 6:15a. Yeah. I didn’t leave work until about 4:30 since I had a meeting I really wanted to do in person. Fortunately, there was iced Dunkin coffee for me and a dinner date at Chick-fil-A. But that meant we weren’t home until almost 6:30p. Long day for someone who hasn’t been out of the house in days. I “quickly” showered and then propped myself up on the couch with the fella to watch Capitals hockey. I made it through the first 2 periods before I just had to lie down. My foot/ankle was throbbing and I just couldn’t get the right angle to prop it up. So I went to lie down and read Jen Lancaster’s Twisted Sisters. (It’s only $2.99 on Kindle for the next week or so. Go buy it!)
I love Jen Lancaster’s books and Twisted Sisters is the only one I haven’t read. I didn’t realize it at the time of purchase but a character in this book connects to one in Here I Go Again. So…I will say, if you didn’t care for that book, you probably won’t like Twisted Sisters. But this is a good fluffy read. I’ve been reading a lot of books lately so I know I’m due for a review of them. I don’t think I’ve reviewed anything I’ve read since September! So I’ll get on that. To preview what I’ve read since the new year:
So I’ve been delving into different genres but they’ve all been good. I should finish Twisted Sisters this weekend and I’ll likely start up Insurgent this weekend as someone is loaning the hard copy to me and well, it’s not like I can go do a whole lot…like run the 5K I had planned for tomorrow. Bummer. But I’m going to cheer on friends who are doing it in the cold without me tomorrow…and by cheer on I mean from my couch with my foot propped up. I’m not feeling crazy enough to go in person. 😉
I hope you all have happy Fridays and happy weekends!
Well, folks, it was a gorgeous weekend here in Maryland. We’re talking sunny skies and 60 degree weather. I went for a run Sunday morning. Except I slipped on ice…twice…and I think on the second fall I sprained my ankle. The fella took me to Urgent Care once he got off work yesterday. I did indeed badly sprain my ankle. They don’t see anything broken in my X-rays so they wrapped it up and sent me home with crutches. I’m working at home today so I can ice and elevate it as I need to. I can’t tell you how much this upset me yesterday. I cried all morning because 1. it hurts like mad and 2. I’m really concerned about what this means for my half marathon training. I already have to skip a 5K I was really looking forward to this Saturday and depending on how I heal, I may have to miss another 5K in two weeks. I don’t know if I’ll be up to running within 2 weeks. Walking, sure, but I don’t know about running. It’s already a challenge for me because my right knee is a pain. Well, now, my right ankle is IN pain. Totally bummed out and totally bored with sitting on my tailbone icing this thing. Having to ask for help to get up out of low chairs or help getting moving if I’ve sat for a long time is horrible. I’m very fortunate I’m dating the sweetest man on the planet but I’m sure many of you are like me and hate being or feeling like you’re being a burden. So…here’s hoping for a speedy recovery.
Y’all. It’s 3 months until my half marathon. On one hand that seems so far away still but on the other it seems way too close. Last week I had a stomach bug and there were snow days and I just slacked off the running. I got back to it yesterday and took advantage of the fact that my training plan has 2 weeks that are practically identical. So I ran 5 miles yesterday (indoors) and I got up and ran 3 miles this morning (indoors). I’m hoping to be outdoors by week’s end as tomorrow it should be warming up to near 50 and staying that way for the rest of the week. But the good news is I figured out a rhythm with the treadmill that doesn’t make me want to stab myself in the eye…at least on shorter distances.
I had a lovely weekend full of love. Friday night, the fella brought home take-out from our favorite local Italian place and we had a romantic dinner in before heading out to a comedy club to see Ralphie May. It was a great night and these happened:
They’re perfect, right? Yeah, I think so. 🙂
Saturday was a day spent entirely in the house. We didn’t go outside for anything. We watched movies, napped, watched some tv, and just had time together. Sunday evening we went out to dinner and hit up the grocery store because we’re super exciting like that. But we ended the night on the couch with the newest episode of Walking Dead. Do any of you watch that? You should. So intense and such a well done show.
How was your weekend?
I don’t know about y’all but I’m extra glad that it’s Friday. This week has just been long. I’m taking my PMP exam next Wednesday so I’ve been studying extra hard this week. I’m just ready for it to be over now. I’m taking off Tuesday to study a bit and just relax my brain then Wednesday morning I’ll probably be a nervous wreck until noon when it’s time to take the exam. So today I’m telling you that Friday is fabulous because:
1. I started the day with an extra powerful “push/pull” series in my training session right after a seriously heart pumping Spin class.
2. The fella and I are headed to Amish country tomorrow for the day. I can’t wait to get away and and enjoy some special time with my favorite person! (He’s also pretty damn fabulous himself.)
3. This Friday is fabulous because in 2 weeks at this time we will be hanging with my family for 4 days in North Carolina. Cannot. Wait. Family time is a need right now.
4. It’s finally warmed up a smidge around these parts. This week has been bitter cold and it’s finally just a teeny bit warmer.
5. I’m looking forward to SO many fun things coming up in the next 6 weeks that every day feels fabulous because it gets me closer to something fun!
Since I posted last week a lot has been happening so I’m doing a bulleted/picture update. First the pictures and then the bullets to explain and some extras (without pics).
- I got beautiful roses from my special guy.
- October night skies are one of the most gorgeous things nature can show us.
- I burned a lot of calories for my last workout last week. I had training followed by Spin. It does a body good.
- I made delicious healthy pizzas for 2. Flat out bread, pasta sauce, cheese, sliced chicken sausages. Bake. Eat ’em up!
- Deciding to leave work early on Wednesday and start my vacation was the best idea ever. I treated myself to a mani/pedi. I do pedicures often but I never get manicures. I use my hands too much and I just don’t see the point in spending the money. But I had a special event for the weekend so I figured, why not? That’s OPI’s Lincoln Park After Dark. It’s also still holding up really well!
- Beautiful wedding for my dear friend! It rained “liquid sunshine” but it stopped just in time for the actual ceremony and it was perfect in every way.
- My calves are finally not sore this morning after a night full of dancing on Friday. Shennanigans ensued the more the liquor flowed.
- Having white wine and Doritos when one is intoxicated is rather delicious (and classy).
- We found a great little lunch spot that was actually a dairy farm. We stopped there on Thursday and had ice cream. The very small was anything but. I had chocolate red velvet ice cream. I know!! On Saturday as we were leaving the area, we stopped back for lunch. I got a bowl of fresh fruit, cornbread, a sampling of cheeses, a bowl of soup (half cream of crab, half Maryland crab), and a “very small” ice cream that was half peanut butter and half cookies ‘n’ cream. All of that for less than $9. Steal!
And not pictured.
- Amish country on Saturday with the fella was a perfect cap to the weekend. Beautiful scenery, delicious snacks, excitement over seeing Amish buggies and a 2-buggy garage. Seriously, the scenery driving up there was gorgeous but my camera just wasn’t doing it justice. We definitely have plans to go back to certain spots after getting such a great preview.
- I signed up for a half marathon yesterday. It’s not until May so I have plenty of training time and I should be able to train in less harsh weather months. (I’m still processing my craziness.)
It’s hump dAAAAAAAAAy! Really, does the camel ever get old? No.
So I’ve been trucking along the last few days getting back on track with healthier eating and back into my workout routine. I spent a lovely Friday night and Saturday afternoon out with the fella. Saturday night it was out on the town for a dear friend’s bachelorette party and then Sunday? Sunday was full of couch time. I caught up on DVR, watched football, napped, and just hung out with my guy. It was a splendid weekend where you look back on it and say, “Man, I love my life.” Then, the government shut down. Now, fortunately we’ve determined this doesn’t impact my job (for now). But I’m so saddened by it and my heart goes out to those that are directly and immediately impacted. Shame on the government. Not a good way to set an example they claim they want to set. But I do believe my country will perservere because it’s amazing full of amazing people. Ok, off the political soapbox.
I have such a fun October planned. My dear friend from above? Well, she’s getting married next Friday night so off to celebrate that next weekend. Then I’m going to take the Project Management Professional (PMP) exam prep course later in the month followed by the Clemson/MD game for the last weekend. October is my favorite month so I’m excited for the already planned things and for the things that will happen that have yet to be seen!
A couple of Saturdays ago after the NFL 5K, my guy and I went apple pickin’!
You need to make these recipes immediately. No really. If you make that applesauce, you’ll never buy applesauce again. Ever. It’s way too easy. Plus it makes your house smell amazing.
I don’t have pictures of the cookies because they’re not very photogenic. But let me tell you….they’re like snickerdoodles with an apple flavor. It’s not overwhelming.
The Apple Cake is delicious! I actually made it as a loaf so I had to cook it longer than the recipe that is linked calls for. It was super easy to pull together and quite delicious.
As far as the Apple Pie Pockets I followed the recipe linked above but I added a dollop of caramel dip to the top of the apple mixture before sealing up the pies. I’d also recommend dipping the pies in caramel dip as you eat them. Yum yum.
Apple picking (and baking) seems to have re-energized my desire to bake. We bought Pumpkin Spice M&Ms that weekend. They’re ok to eat but not great. However, I think they’re be fantastic in some cookies I made over this past weekend! That recipe is to come!
Welcome to August 1, the start of my birthday month! My birthday is August 7 so I say it starts August 1 and I feel like that’s close enough. But I like to drag it out, too, because, um…hello, I’m worth more than a day anyway.
I woke up happy, despite the rain, this morning. But it wasn’t long after being at work that my little workgroup got some unfortunate news and it sent me spiraling into despair and feeling the stress that has been work for a couple of weeks now. All I want to do is cry. And hug my fella. I totally failed at lunch with eating as in, I didn’t go get food and snacked out of my drawer (BAD IDEA). But I’m trying to buck up because I have to since I’m a professional and all and I have to interact and lead a meeting later this afternoon. I’m looking forward to a workout this evening and I’m so happy that my fella has agreed to come see me tonight so I can hug him. And I’ll eat something healthy tonight instead of letting my pity party continue. So August 2 should start better. I’ll wake up next to my favorite person, I’ll go to spin, I will have a fantastic training session, and I WILL have a good day at work tomorrow. Then it’ll be time to weekend party. Ain’t no party like a low-key weekend party!
Well, I’d like to say it’s Friday Fun Day. But I’m not feeling it…yet.
My plan for today was to go to Spin at 5:30a followed by my personal training session at 6:30a. Well, my body had other things in store. Yesterday I went to grab a water out of the vending machine and pulled a muscle in my lower back. Yep, that’s right. I can be in full on beast mode at the gym but a 20 oz. bottle of Aquafina kicked my ass. So, I went home early in some denial that I’d be down for the count. I went to dinner with my fella and his dad and made it through “ok” but also knew by the end that the gym would be out of the question this morning. So I went to sleep still in denial that I’d feel bad. I
tossed and turned rolled and grimaced and stayed awake for a solid 2 hours in the middle of the night. Now? Currently in my office with a heating pad on my lower back. Once I get up and moving around I’m mostly ok. It’s just when I sit or lay down for too long that I hurt.
Despite my discomfort, my guy is the best thing since sliced bread. He got to my house about the time I did yesterday afternoon and took quite good care of me. And this afternoon/evening I’ll be feeling that Friday Fun Day thing. Because, I’ll get to spend some time with him that doesn’t end with one of us having to get up early and head to work the next morning. So dinner and Sons of Anarchy (yeah, he’s been recently hooked on it) perhaps this evening followed by hopefully, the Annapolis Irish Festival and fireworks tomorrow. I don’t want my back holding me….back….
What’s your Friday Fun Day full of?
