Y’all. It’s 3 months until my half marathon. On one hand that seems so far away still but on the other it seems way too close. Last week I had a stomach bug and there were snow days and I just slacked off the running. I got back to it yesterday and took advantage of the fact that my training plan has 2 weeks that are practically identical. So I ran 5 miles yesterday (indoors) and I got up and ran 3 miles this morning (indoors). I’m hoping to be outdoors by week’s end as tomorrow it should be warming up to near 50 and staying that way for the rest of the week. But the good news is I figured out a rhythm with the treadmill that doesn’t make me want to stab myself in the eye…at least on shorter distances.
I had a lovely weekend full of love. Friday night, the fella brought home take-out from our favorite local Italian place and we had a romantic dinner in before heading out to a comedy club to see Ralphie May. It was a great night and these happened:

Saturday was a day spent entirely in the house. We didn’t go outside for anything. We watched movies, napped, watched some tv, and just had time together. Sunday evening we went out to dinner and hit up the grocery store because we’re super exciting like that. But we ended the night on the couch with the newest episode of Walking Dead. Do any of you watch that? You should. So intense and such a well done show.
How was your weekend?
Merry (day after) Christmas! I had my first Christmas away from my family and had my first truly cold Christmas. Normally, I’m in south GA but I did that a 2 weeks ago so my Christmas Eve was spent with my fella at my place. We made a gingerbread house, watched Christmas movies (A Christmas Story and It’s a Wonderful Life), ate a lovely lasagna dinner, and reflected on our year.
Christmas morning we were like kids. We only slept until about 7:30 before we were up and ready to open stockings and exchange gifts. Let’s just say, my guy did well. While it’s hard to pick a favorite gift since they’re all perfect for me and I love them all…two presents stand out in my mind. I opened a box that had a pair of running gloves that I wanted. But…then I realized that those running gloves had the bracelet I’d really been wanting placed around the wrist. Totally shocked me because even though I’d asked for the bracelet, I was pretty certain it wasn’t happening.
The second present is something that I can’t even tell you how much I will cherish. I’ve always said you have to go through all 4 seasons with someone to really know them and be “sure” of them. (Even though I was certain about K well before the second season we spent together.) Well, he got a 4 picture frame and put a picture we’ve taken from each of the 4 seasons we’ve spent together and wrote in the center “Thank you for the best 4 seasons of my life.” I totally cried. It’s something that embraces what this season and what our love is all about. Nothing can top that. (So, K, if you’re reading this…I changed my mind…that’s totally my favorite gift.)
After we spent a lazy, lovely morning and afternoon together we got out of our PJs and into the car and headed over to have a fantastic Italian dinner with K’s family. We opened more presents and shared a delicious meal and enjoyed each other’s company. We finished our night with a little time reflecting on the day and looking forward to what the next year will bring us. For a Christmas away from home and my family, I sure felt loved and part of K’s family.
I had a fantastic holiday weekend! Thursday, July 4, I started my day with a super sweaty cardio and training session.
I started with 6 minutes on the Stairmill followed by 20 on the treadmill. I did some speed intervals on the treadmill. By the time I got to my trainer, I’d already burned 731 calories! For realz. Fortunately, she took pity on me and didn’t make me do squats. We’re doing the 30-Day squat challenge and that day was supposed to be a rest day. So since she knew I’d been killing it with the squats for 3 days and I had an intense warm-up, she mostly worked my core and arms. Sure, my lower body was worked but it wasn’t the main focus. Ya know?
After my workout, it was time to relax! My guy came over and we hung out with the roomie most of the day. I roasted up chicken sausages, peppers, and onions for “dogs.” We had mini bell peppers stuffed with string cheese as a side. There was also a lot of chips/guac and wine involved that day.
Friday I was back to work but took off a little early for some bonus time with my guy. Followed by drinks (prickly pear maragaritas!) with some friends. Saturday was a perfect day with my guy. It started with breakfast and a little shopping. That evening we had dinner and sat by the water for a while before seeing World War Z. If you’re into zombies at all….go see that movie! It was great! It’s nothing like the book so if you’ve read it, don’t expect it to be. You’ll really enjoy the action and suspense of this movie!
Sunday I hit the gym for a stairmill and treadmill workout followed by cleaning and then laziness.
So how did I feel about my health and fitness over the holiday weekend? So-so. I felt pretty good about working out since I got in a serious new groove with the cardio sessions. It was the first time I’ve really worked on the stairmill after my trainer got me on it. It’s a serious calorie burner and sweat inducer. I enjoyed food over the 4 days. I ate what I wanted for the most part and I enjoyed ice cream and other sweet treats. While I don’t regret it, it is the reason I’m back on a strict/serious discipline plan today. I don’t believe in depriving yourself when you’re trying to lose weight, but I do believe it takes discipline and decision making. I didn’t do either of those very well over the 4 days. My weight shows it. So back to working on it! More on that in another post.
Now it’s just time to go chill out on the couch and look over all my Christmas goodies.

You know those foods that with just one bite you’re transported back to your youth? Well, last night I made one of those. I made my grandmother’s peanut butter balls. I remember her making them every Christmas and every summer for our beach trip.
I’ve started my baking for holiday boxes I give out. This year, these babies are part of them. I dare you to try them and not want to eat them all on the spot…and that’s before you get the chocolate on them!
Peanut Butter Balls
1 stick butter
2 c creamy peanut butter
16 oz. powdered sugar*
3 c puffed rice cereal
1 bag chocolate chips
Melt butter and peanut butter in sauce pan. Combine powdered sugar and cereal in a large bowl. Pour melted peanut butter into cereal mixture. Mix together with hands (be careful it will be warm!). Roll into 1 inch balls and place on baking sheet. Chill in the refrigerator until firm, about 30 minutes.
Melt chocolate and dip balls into chocolate to coat completely. Set out on waxed paper to set.
* My grandmother’s recipe called for 1 box of powdered sugar. I love how older recipes from good cooks are written out!
What a day! I had a full day of work followed by leading a hour long Boot Camp, hitting the grocery store, coming home to start on the holiday baking, and wrapping presents. I thought I’d have it in me to start on my holiday cards, but I don’t. Not after making 4 pans of these:
In case you’re wondering, that’s about 3 and a half bags of Hershey Hugs, which is about 400 pretzel sandwiches. That’s a lot of laying out flat even pretzels and hug unwrapping.
So after wrapping some presents I decided instead of starting my holiday cards, I’d make my list of other baked goods to make and get my grocery list started. I’m going to be doing a lot of baking on Wednesday and Thursday night. The baked good boxes are going to work on Friday so I’ll be a busy little elf this week. Unfortunately, I can’t take off from my real job to do all this. In fact, my real job is extremely busy and I’m working more hours than normal. That’s part of why I haven’t been a very good blogger as of late. The other part is well, when I do have free time, I just want to have free time, you know?

I don’t know about y’all but I’m in that Christmas spirit now. I decorated my apartment on Monday night. I know have a pretty tree to enjoy every night.
I still want something else in terms of decorations though. Maybe something along these lines:
Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot, but the Grinch, who lived just north of Whoville – did not.
The Grinch hated Christmas – the whole Christmas season.
Now, please don’t ask why; no one quite knows the reason. It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight. Or it could be that his head wasn’t screwed on just right.
But I think that the most likely reason of all… may have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
It’s that time of year where I watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas almost every night. Not the Jim Carrey version, the original (and only in my opinion). It’s airing tonight on ABC at 8pm. I can quote the entire movie and probably annoy anyone who watches it with me.
I was hoping to decorate for Christmas last night but I was tired when I got home so I caught up on DVR and watched The Walking Dead. So tonight after a (much needed) workout, I’m headed home to watch my favorite Christmas movie of all time and start decking the halls.
